As many of you know, COTD returned. And with it came a piece of history that has been missing around these parts for quite some time: Skay’s angels, delivery befitting chariots to the champions of wit and wisdom.

And I don’t care if you can find similar stuff elsewhere or if it offends your tender sensibilities, that shit is awesome. God bless $kaycog for carrying tradition through and not giving in to the whiners trying to scrub this place of every last bit of its old personality and community.

Ma’am, we salute you.

“God bless $kaycog for carrying tradition through and not giving in to the whiners trying to scrub this place of every last bit of its old personality and community.”

... or just trying to make it a more welcoming place. I mean, I’m fine with no NSFW being posted. And I still feel like this place has loads of community and personality. So yeah, I don’t know what you’re on about.

Or, and I’m just spitballing here, people could quit joining things expecting traditions to change to accomodate them. If People don’t like it, they shouldn’t be here. There are plenty of alternatives. Maybe they should try Autoblog.

I got you, bro.

On an unrelated note (but since I have your attention): How’s the work shit going? Last I saw, it seemed like bullshit continued to flow...

Okay, let me just ask you an honest question. I’m not trying to stir shit or anything, but I’m curious: why is posting NSFW such a big deal for you? Is it only the tradition thing? Or is it something else? Because tradition does not make something good automatically. It’s always good to question what you’re doing, and if something needs to be changed.

It’s a nightmare. My finance department had become a nightmare. They are literally handcuffing and bottlenecking everything that we take to them. I almost lost a deal or two last week.

And I haven’t heard anything from any of my job connections. It’s getting discouraging, because I’m just trying to better myself. And I’m not even giving up on my job now while I’m looking. I’m literally damned if I do and damned if I don’t.

I don’t post nsfw, and I never have. But the way it was handled is just a symptom of a bigger problem. We have literally changed who we are and what we do to appease the over-sensitive whining of some fly-by-night noobies. Is banning one type of post a major upheaval? No not at all. But the reason why it was done is very disheartening.

I didn’t state that you did post NSFW, it’s just you seem to press the issue a lot. The reason, I recall, was to make it more welcoming for women (since they don’t want to see nude women everywhere) and also the Google thing mentioned earlier. Not a terrible reason, but I understanding changing things for non-regulars, if you will, can be seen as a bad thing.

But then again, nothing has really changed, from what I can see. My Oppo experience was never affected by those posts, but other people might have been. They might have seen the posts and comments and gone “yeah... this place isn’t for me”. It’s not like they’re banning us from stating our opinions or anything, so I have no issues with changing things a small bit, especially considering how little NSFW posts contributed to the greater good of Oppo. Removing it may have made this place more attractive for people to join, and people with different experiences and stories are totally groovy in my book, tradition be damned.

There was a major shift in regulation that came along with the ban though. It was also when we started to moderate what people said more heavily. That’s the part that I’m not happy about. It used to be that if you had a disagreement with someone on Oppo, you could verbily “take it outside”. Now the second there’s a major disagreement, there’s the threat of ban or the deletion of your posts. I say some off the wall things, especially if someone posses me off. It used to not amount to a hill of beans. Now I have to watch what I say to people here, and for me at least, that has shifted the dynamics around greatly.

Because whining about whining and being over-sensitive about precious tits n ass are *totally* different from anyone else’s whining.

Fair point, but those comment threads amounted to “hey, go fuck yourself” for thirty posts. I mean, I’m not sure you saw what happened in the thread that caused Logansteno to leave, but I think the throwing around of warnings was warranted there. If two people have a major disagreement, keeping it civil and not breaking down to personal attacks means that the thread won’t be touched. Once again, the rules of “don’t be a dick” apply.

For example, this discussion between us could have broken down into insults about how you’re a perv fow wanting NSFW and I’m a dickwad for wanting censorship (not that I think that, you’re a pretty alright guy) like how a lot of these threads end up going. But you and I are keeping it polite, even though we have different points of view. We’re explaining what we think instead of just dropping to “you’re stupid” and “you wouldn’t understand, moron”.

In sum, I think the mods only show up when necessary and when things get out of control. When people are keeping things groovy, it’s all good.

I just don’t do well with undertones. And when I argue with people, they tend to try to use them a lot. I myself just prefer to be blunt and straightforward. And it’s gotten me in trouble more than a few times. The problems I have are when people pretend to dance around what they really want to say because they feel they’re too righteous or too intelligent to say what they want.

For the record, we are having a wonderful discussion and the paragraph above does not apply to you. You actually are intelligent and saying what you mean, you just hold no malice.

I’ve just noticed that when people come to a place and constantly complain about the content, and they’re appeased, it tends to do more harm than good to a community. If something has been a certain way for years, it shouldn’t change unless someone who built it’s foundations wishes it so. If you’re uncomfortable somewhere, and its not something you created, then the nature and right thing to do is leave. You don’t walk into someone else’s house and complain about their decor, expecting them to change it to fit your tastes.

Ooh metaphors. Sweet. If someone keeps insisting that you’re welcome in their home, and you mention that their air freshener is making you break out in hives, you’re not really that welcome if they keep insisting on using the same air freshener for no reason.

I think comparing it to a medical issue is only SLIGHTLY over dramatic. Its more like there’s art in the living room that makes you uncomfortable. Which is hardly the same as what you described.

My real question is how do you feel knowing that it wasn’t even one of is gross boys that posted it?

As if the “walk into someone else’s house and complain about their decor expecting them to change it to fit your tastes” wasn’t overdramatic? Not once did I campaign for the end of NSFW. People constantly being jerks about it brought it upon themselves when mods got tired of dealing with the nastiness that came from those threads. See the handbook.

I also don’t refer to anyone here as “gross boys,” and I’m not sure why you think it would make any difference who posts it.

You’re definitely spit-balling here. CB is exactly right - NSFW was curtailed because A) it did limit our potential for growth as a community and B) we really were tired of going in and constantly cleaning up the shitshow that they always devolved into.

And guess what? Since that decision was made, there has been a notable growth in Oppositelock coupled with a massive decrease of shitstorms.

Many complained about it at the time, but they accepted it and moved forward. Some even threatened to leave, and yet, somehow, they’re still here. Perhaps that’s because at the end of the day, they still enjoy the automotive enthusiast aspect of Oppositelock. Or perhaps they realized that this is just one little corner of the Internet, and it’s not something worth getting butthurt about for months on end.

At this point, it really is just you and a literal handful of others who still have their shirts twisted in a bunch over this. Literally, there are less than ten people that keep complaining about this - including you. But the community does not revolve around one person or even a tiny, select group of people. It revolves around everyone as a whole.

Everyone else has either been cool with the change or simply not given a shit one way or the other. This change was made months ago, and the reasons for it were explained ad infinitum. At this point, if you still don’t understand, or if you simply misunderstand, then it’s a deliberate choice on your part to not understand.

And quite frankly, that’s on you.

Either way, the change has been made, and we’re not going back on it. It’s time to grow up and move on now. There must be more important things - more pressing things - in your life that demand your attention than this. In fact, I’m sure there are. Have the courage to change the things in your life that you can change, the patience to accept the things that can’t change, and the wisdom to know the difference.

You can’t change this particular little thing, a thing that has no bearing on your actual life whatsoever. So why do you keep wasting so much of your time and energy on it? Move on to things that actually matter.

As for how heavily this place is moderated, well, let me give you a brief but pertinent illustration of how lightly moderated this place is: if the moderation here were anywhere near the totalitarian state that you imply it to be, this entire post would have been deleted already. Note that it hasn’t been deleted, despite being seen and perused by several mods. You see, we don’t care what your opinions are or that choose to express them. We care about how you choose to express them. Insults, shit-flinging, and general dickishness is frowned upon and will lead to moderation.

If you can keep it civil and within the bounds of the handful of rules that Oppositelock has, then knock yourself out. As for what gets posted on the front page... that’s not our business. They can do whatever they want there.

And so, here we are. You wanted a place where there could be civil, but blunt conversation? Here you go. I do genuinely appreciate the civilness with which you’ve conducted yourself and expressed your opinions in this post.

Allow me to be equally civil, yet blunt, in return: the rules are what they are for a reason. No amount of whining, complaining, or arguing is going to change that, so don’t waste the energy on it. If you don’t like it, it is within your power to find somewhere else that better suits you.

And that, as they say, is that. If you find this place suits you as is, you're more than welcome here. If it doesn't suit you as is, devote the effort necessary to find a place that you like better. I don't know what else to tell you at this point.
